'Create A Space'

For my Create a Space Assignment, Dr. Bilaniuk let me choose some diagrams from the unit in the textbook for the students to create. The unit the students are working on right now is Optics, more specifically how light is produced. When I was looking through the textbook for ideas, I found 5 diagrams which show how light can interfere with objects and how colour is produced. The 5 pictures below are what I had the students produce.

Examples From the Textbook

This diagram shows how light interferes with objects, in this case an apple and a green pepper, to produce the specific colour of the object. With the apple, all of the colours of the light spectrum minus red are absorbed and the red is reflected to give the apple a red colour. The same applies to the pepper, all of the colours of the light spectrum minus green are absorbed into the pepper and the green is reflected to give the pepper a green appearance. The students had learned this the week prior leading up to this assignment, so it was a fun activity for them to do.

In this diagram, it gives a description of how colour is produced with information on each part of the diagram.

This diagram shows the three ways light interacts with different surfaces. With transparent objects, light transmits through the object. With opaque objects, all light is reflected. With translucent objects, some light is transmitted through the object and some light is reflected.

This diagram shows how the light spectrum interests with itself to produce the different colours. This is called additive colours, because when put together it creates white light.

This diagram shows subtractive colours. It could be thought of as the opposite of additive colours, as when all the colours of the light spectrum are put all together it produces no light.

Construction of Posters

I didn't take too many photo's of the students working as I forgot to while helping them, but here are a few.

When I came in the day we worked on the posters, Dr. Bilaniuk had me prepare the paper for the posters. I started out by seeing what was needed from the diagrams and the most efficient way I could do this. In this picture, I have two sets of coloured paper for the additive and subtractive diagrams and white paper, which I cut in half for each poster.

Dr. Bilaniuk had me trace the circles, to make it easier for the two groups who would produce the additive and subtractive posters. I drew the circles on each of the coloured papers, gave those groups a white poster board and showed them the diagrams to follow.

Here is one of the groups working on their poster. This is when I realized I should probably have taken photo's of more groups but it was too late already. I thought showing the groups picture to practically what to copy would be easy for them, but a lot of the groups had a hard time figuring out what to do still, so I was helping them do this more than just supervising them.

Finished Product

Here is the outcome of the 'Create A Space' Assignment. This was taken a few days after I put up the posters, so Dr. Bilaniuk added the colour wheels we made about a week before the posters. While I was helping students create their posters, Dr. Bilaniuk made the posters which describe which each pillar is.

The poster for additive colour was created by Haily, Brad, Ed and Mark.

The top poster was made by Sarah Ward, Brenda and Maddison. The middle poster was made by Moe, Josh and Sabir. The bottom poster was made by Giuseppe, Phillip and Obse.

The subtractive colour poster was made by Noah, Cameron and Justin.
